Position: GIS Expert to Support Land-Use Planning & Natural Resources Monitoring in SGR and NNP
Job Summary
FZS vision in Tanzania FZS is committed to maintaining biodiversity and conserving wildlife and ecosystems in protected areas and outstanding wild places of the Serengeti, the Selous/Nyerere and the Mahale ecosystems in partnership with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. As part of our growing conservation efforts within Selous Game Reserve and Nyerere National Park, FZS is looking for a GIS expert to support her vision and mission in SGR/NNP. The successful applicant will have proven knowledge and experience with GIS skills and spatial planning. S/he will also demonstrate applied use of conservation planning, and an in-depth understanding of GIS.

The GIS expert together with Communication Radio will work with partners and key stakeholders to ensure that land-use plans are developed with the goal of safeguarding key natural and social resources Such land-use plans shall be developed in a participatory way, drawing on a combination scientific understanding of Selous ecosystem functioning, and recognized best practices. The successful applicant will demonstrate experience in the use of GIS databases for spatial monitoring, and developing monitoring and evaluation systems to assess the implementation of land-use plans and their impact on conservation outcomes.
Job Description
  • The GIS expert will report directly to the Deputy Project Leader based in Matambwe

Specific Duties:
  • Compile accurate and high-quality spatial ecological and socio-economic into GIS, including relevant ground-truthing where necessary
  • Integrate spatial data and outcomes of scientific research to ensure land-use plans are based on best available data
  • Work closely with Nyerere National Park/SGR GIS departments to maintain database of satellite images to ensure land-use plans are accurate and reviewed regularly
  • Provide technical advice, facilitation and capacity building to SGR and Nyerere National Park management based natural resource management institutions and relevant stakeholders on GIS related issues.
  • Generates patrol maps for Forest Scouts and Elephant groups

General Duties:
  • Prepare work plans, budgets, activity reports, and technical or donor reports as needed
  • Ensure project monitoring and evaluation in line with monitoring plan
  • Maintain relationships with project partners, ensuring two-way flow of information
  • Represent FZS-Selous in meetings with key ecosystem stakeholders
  • Ensure project strategies are based on best-practices wherever possible, and advise project team to promote adaptive management
  • Manage, mentor and build the capacity of project and partner staff
  • Adhere to all FZS financial and administrative policies and regulations
  • Assure proper, efficient and transparent use of project funds
  • Responsible use and care of project equipment and assets
Read Also:
Required
  • Master’s degree in GIS with a focus on spatial planning
  • Extensive knowledge of GIS database management and spatial data collection
  • Extensive knowledge of Tanzanian laws, acts and regulations pertaining to land-use
  • At least 3 years’ experience in dealing with GIS
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in natural resource conservation or related field
  • Fluency in Kiswahili and English
  • Ability and willingness to live and work in remote areas and travel within Tanzania including rural field sites
Desired:
  • Knowledge in development and use of geospatial models to assess impact of land-use
  • Remote Sensing experience
  • Extensive experience in natural resource sector of Tanzania

Terms
The position will be based in Matambwe, SGR/ NNP with frequent visits to the field.
Note: This position is open to both internal and external applicants.
